As she reached the end of her year 12 studies at Launceston College, Kara Landsberg knew one thing for certain – she wanted to work in the engineering industry.
Thanks to this drive and support from family members, Kara was able to ensure she studied all the right STEM subjects, such as Maths Methods and Physical Sciences. However, rather than take the path of jumping into University study, Kara wanted to get into the industry right away. Enter, Rare. Kara sent an expression of interest, based off the knowledge that Rare is an innovative organisation with a great mission and workplace culture.
It’s now been 9 months since Kara commenced in her role at Rare as a Draftsperson, and she is enjoying every moment! She currently works full time while studying a Certificate 4 in Engineering Drafting at TasTAFE, and is juggling both with great success, thanks in part to the support from the team at Rare. Upon completing her certificate, Kara will have qualifications over multiple areas of engineering drafting, both structural and civil.
As a Draftsperson, Kara’s role is to draw engineering designs; decoding technical engineering notes to include in designs to ensure projects are built correctly. She will also head out on-site to investigate plans and make sure everything is exactly as it has been drawn on a plan. It’s a very detail-oriented role, and there is no room to guess when it comes to engineering designs, which Kara loves.
Looking to the future, Kara is excited about the opportunities that may come her way. For now, she loves her work and what she does at Rare, taking great pride in seeing her engineering plans and drawings come to life. Kara also enjoys the great culture at Rare, and the supportive and fun team environment.
As the only female Draftsperson at Rare, Kara really wants to see more women getting into the industry. Her advice to any females looking to take on a role in STEM - “Give it a try! If you’re willing to learn you’ll go far”.
